Brief History Photo

Dr. Richard "Dick"C. Toren, 90, of Lincoln passed away on December 18, 2015, at the Tabitha Journey House. Richard was born on March 10, 1925 in Lincoln, to Paul O. Toren and Viola R. (Anderson) Toren. Richard lived in Lincoln the majority of his life where he attended Lincoln High School, the University of Nebraska (pre-med), then onto UNMC in Omaha for his medical schooling.

Richard had a successful career and was on staff at Lincoln General, Bryan Memorial, and St. Elizabeth's Hospitals. He was chief of staff at Lincoln General, and chief of surgery at Lincoln General and St. Elizabeth's Hospitals, and was a diplomat of the American Board of Surgery. Richard was also, a WWII Army Medical Corp. veteran, member of Sheridan Lutheran Church, AMA, NMA, LCMS and the Lincoln Country Club.

Richard is survived by his wife, Mary (Looschen) Toren; son, Richard B. (Sara) Toren Jr.; two granddaughters, Erica (Matt Sayer) Toren, Willa (Jeremy) Toren-Senn; great-grandchildren, Niles and Claire Senn, and Sophia Sayer; brother, Dr. Paul E. (Barbara) Toren; Lori Toren- Hruska. Preceded in death by his parents; sister, Carolyn Turnquist; and son, David Toren.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, December 22, at Sheridan Lutheran Church, 6955 Old Cheney Rd. Memorials may be directed to the Sheridan Lutheran Church, the Lincoln Food Bank (c/o the Backpack Program), or the Lighthouse. Private family interment at Lincoln Memorial Park.
