Memorial Mass will be at 10 am Monday, January 26, 2015 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Fremont.  Rev. Father David Belt and Deacon Duane Karmazin will officiate.  A book signing will be on Sunday from 4 to 8 pm with a Knights of Columbus Rosary at 7 pm, all at Moser Memorial Chapel in Fremont.  Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery in Fremont at a later date.  Memorials may be given to St. Patrick’s Catholic Church.

Bill was a member of the St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Fremont and member of the Knights of Columbus Council #1497.  He also was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles #200 in Fremont.

He is survived by his wife, Joyce, son, Scott Grosserode of St. Louis, MO; two daughters, Julie and husband, Steve Grosse-Rhode and Jill Kigerl-Owens and husband, Mike Owens all of Omaha.  Bill’s one brother, Joe and wife, Sally Grosserode of Tilden, NE;  Five sisters, Kathy Bussey of Battle Creek, NE, Margaret Morrow of Woodland, CA, Mary Harvey of Rosamond, CA, Lucy and husband, Joe Staskiewicz of Lincoln, NE and Jane and husband, Terry Moppin of Bellevue, NE.  Four grandchildren, Nick and Emily Grosse-Rhode and Nathan and Delaney Kigerl.

Bill's good friend, Lambert Kluthe, made him a poker table and poker chip box that they used during the monthly card playing event.   As we were shopping for a urn for Dad, Mom asked if the ashes would fit in this specially made box.

Mom wanted her ashes buried in the same vault with Dad's box.  She told us to use a paint can.....imagine that!

Jesus Calling has been a special book for us during Dad's illness.   We have some memorable memories to share that have truly been comforting for our family.

January 20th Devotion from Jesus Calling by Sarah Young

“Approach this day with awareness of who is Boss.  As you make plans for the day, remember that it is I who orchestrate the events of your life.  On days when things go smoothly, according to your plans, you may be unaware of My sovereign Presence.  On days when your plans are thwarted, be on the lookout for Me!  I may be doing something important in your life, something quite different from what you expected.  It is essential at such times to stay in communication

with Me, accepting My way as better than yours.  Don’t try to figure out what is happening.  Simply trust Me and thank Me in advance for the good that will come out of it all.  I know the plans I have for you, and they are good.”

Mom was staying at Jill's home and this was very comforting to her.  She put the book open to this page on Jill's pillow before she went to bed.

The next day Dad was not well.  He did not want the oxygen and was frustrated with all activity.  The staff was recommending a feeding tube.  Jill and Mom asked when was it time to change the medical course to make him comfortable.   He was very happy with the decision.

January 21st Devotion from Jesus Calling by Sarah Young

“I want you to be all Mine.  I am weaning you from other dependencies.  Your security rests in Me alone – not in other people, not in circumstances.  Depending only on Me may feel like walking on a tightrope, but there is a safety net underneath: the everlasting arms.  So don’t be afraid of falling.  Instead look ahead to Me.  I am always before you, beckoning you on – one step at a time.  Neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, can separate you from My loving Presence.

Dad died about 10:30pm that evening with this prayer to comfort him.

Career Photo

Bill was a Fremont Fire Fighter for 26 years.  1966 - 1991

On his days off from the fire department, Bill was the partner with Joyce in Grosserode Painting Inc.  This was truly a family business as the kids grew up going along to many jobs and assisting our parents.  We giggled a lot when Dad sprayed lacquer finish and we went behind him to brush out the doors etc.   When all three of us, Mom, Julie and Jill where enjoying the happy fumes too much, all the windows were opened to calm the fun, no matter what the temperature was outside.

Mom was the Quality Control, QC, and made Dad redo projects before anyone had a chance to say it was not quite perfect.  When it was something we were doing for our own houses, "it was good enough for who it's for".  We grew up working with the folks in the evening as all the other workers left the job site, and Mom and Dad could move around without disrupting other contractors or working on top of each other.  No one wanted to be around them, when they used the smelly stain or lacquer.  And we did not have to worry about anyone touching before it dried.

Dad and Mom built their first duplex in 1967 on 22nd street.  It was an ongoing lesson in rental management and taking care of property as a landlord.  This was another family project especially when tenants moved and Mom always thought we needed to paint.  Dad and Mom were landlords for four duplexes that they built as new construction.

Julie - Dad always told me to "pay yourself first". He had me start a mutual fund and automatically deposit just like you are paying your other bills. Although I took a break during college as soon as I completed my degree, he reminded me to get the automatic payments to myself started and I still have that account to date! He also taught me to be a long term investor.
